Frequently Asked Questions about Class B

We answer the most important legal and administrative questions about obtaining and transferring your car driving licence.

What is the official process for obtaining a car driving licence (Class B)?

We first analyze your individual case. Then we check your foreign documents or initial requirements, organize certified translations, and initiate the official steps with the responsible driver's license authority (e.g., KBA or road traffic office) in a legally compliant manner.

Can I drive in other EU countries with my acquired Class B license?

Yes. A category B driving licence legally obtained in an EU member state (in compliance with the legal provisions) is fully valid throughout the European Union and the EEA, based on the 3rd EU Driving Licence Directive.

What is the difference between regular Class B and B197?

Code 197 allows you to take your practical driving test in a relaxed manner using an automatic vehicle. After completing appropriate driver training, you are then legally authorized to drive manual transmission vehicles as well.

Is a theory or practical test mandatory for a vehicle registration change?

This depends heavily on the issuing country of your current document. Many third countries (such as the USA, Switzerland, and the UK) have special agreements (like Annex 11 of the German Driving License Regulations) that allow for conversion without an examination. We will clarify this for you in advance.

Do I have to comply with the 185-day residency rule?

Yes, absolutely. For official acquisition or legal transfer, you must have your primary residence (at least 185 days per year) in the issuing country. We will advise you transparently on the required official registration documents.
